World Environmental Day

Project Overview

World Environment Day 2023 was celebrated with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” calling on everyone, including the residents of Akwa Ibom, to take a stand against single-use plastics. Plastic pollution has become a significant threat to the environment, harming marine life, polluting oceans and waterways, and contributing to climate change. This year’s theme urged immediate action to reduce plastic use by replacing single-use plastics with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

As part of the day’s activities, a sensitisation, street walk, and public education exercise took place in Etinan, focusing on ways to combat plastic pollution and reduce the impact of climate shocks.

  1. Residents of Akwa Ibom Were Encouraged to Intentionally Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Plastics: Akwa Ibomites were urged to cultivate a culture of reducing plastic usage by choosing alternatives in daily life, reusing what could be reused, and recycling what could not.

  2. Saying NO to Single-use Plastics: People were encouraged to avoid using plastic straws, water bottles, and utensils, choosing more sustainable options instead.

  3. Mindful Shopping: Participants were reminded of the importance of selecting products that are not packaged in plastic, contributing to reduced plastic waste.

  4. Spreading the Word: The message was shared widely, with individuals encouraged to inform their friends, family, and colleagues about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and motivate them to take action.

  5. Regulation of Plastic Production: Governments and industries were called upon to take responsibility for regulating plastic production, use, and disposal to protect the environment.

On World Environment Day, we collectively pledged to make the world a better place by beating plastic pollution. Together, we took significant steps towards preserving our beautiful planet for future generations.
